Garnock travelled to Bishopton for this match and though the weather was fair, the previous night’s rain had made the pitch heavy. The game kicked off with Garnock attacking the changing room end. A long kick start by Tony Fitzgerald and a good chase by the forwards gave Garnock some early possession in the host’s 22. The ball was turned over in the ruck and this lead to a couple of phases at the end of which, captain Connor Wilson barrelled over in the corner for the opening score after 2 minutes. The try went unconverted.
This set the tone for much of the match with Garnock’s bigger pack dominating the set piece and breakdown and creating quality ball for the backs to use, the new half back pairing of Struan Reekie and Tony Fitzgerald working well to make sure the ball was moving quickly to the hard running centres Tom McGuire and Dale Crawford who made good use by scoring 9 tries between them.
Overall a decent performance by Garnock. Credit to Bishopton too, they competed well and the scoreline genuinely didn’t reflect the hard work that they put into the match and they also suffered a couple of injuries which didn’t help their cause. Notable mentions for the day to winger Euan Borthwick who playing only his second game for the club scored two tries to add to the two he bagged in his debut at Ardrossan. Also, to Finlay latter for scoring his first try for the team after some great support running in following a break by Tom McGuire. A popular try all round !
Well done to the coaches and their squad….
