Match Report – Minis and Micros at Strathendrick
Strathendrick Rugby Festival 24th February 2019
Garnock Mighty Micros match report: This was the micros first game of the year, a trip to Strathendrick RFC. Our hosts had also invited East Kilbride, Helensburgh, Hillfoots and McLaren. Great effort from the Garnock Mighty Micros today with a tough opening game against East Kilbride. The next games against McLaren and our hosts Strathendrick were much closer with some good running rugby both in attack and defence being played. A great turnout and for some their first competitive game of rugby. Well done to the new players and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Thanks to all for their support and to Strathendrick for being great hosts. Looking forward to seeing you all again next week.
Garnock P4/5 Match Report: The team travelled to Strathendrick for their first game on grass this year. Conditions were heavy going and I’m pretty sure there will be tired legs tonight! First game was against our hosts. With 12 players there today we fielded 8 at a time and gave the experienced players the start so the new players could see what was what! It was pretty end to end with tries being exchanged by both teams. With some good tackling and turnovers Garnock managed to edge a victory winning 7-3.
Next up was McLaren, a team we hadn’t played before. They knew how to pass the ball around when there was space and this exposed Garnock. We did run in some nice try’s but at times the team were too narrow and our opposition exposed this with some great passing into space. Final score was 4-6 to McLaren.
We then played Hillfoots who were extremely short on players so we gave them 4 players all of whom continued to give it their all. We had a game of seven a side and the game ended in a 9-7 victory for Garnock.
East Kilbride were next. This was a hard fought game with some hard tackles from both teams. Good support play was key to the try scoring and East Kilbride edged a hard fought game winning 5-6.
Our final game was against Helensburgh. By this time the team was tiring but soldiered on. It was a 6 aside game and both teams were still giving their all. Some great tackling and support play helped Garnock win 6-4.
For the first games on grass this year it was clear to see the team were a bit rusty but some good rugby was played. Some sore bodies and very mucky kits but I’m sure everybody enjoyed getting back to business today! Special mentions to Rosie and Quinn who had their first starts today and played very well. Also some great support play from Robson and Adam was great to watch. Well done all!!
Garnock P6/7 Match Report: A big well done to everyone today at Fintry, A hard fought narrow defeat by a very physical Hillfoots, we were a bit rusty as we have not had any games lately, we weren’t that much behind them in the second half and only finished one try behind. East Kilbride followed with a comfortable win for us, then another good win against Strathendrick where we played the best of our rugby. With three quick games in succession the last game against Helensburgh was going to be difficult but we showed a never say die attitude and managed to score in the dying seconds of the game to secure a draw. When we concentrated and supported each other we were brilliant at times. We have lots to work on to improve so looking forward to seeing everyone down at training on Wednesday.
