Irvine 0 Garnock 14
Garnock got their delayed West. Div 1 campaign off to a winning start at a blustery Marress last Saturday.
The gale force wind spoiled the chances of running rugby with both sides failing to use the conditions to their advantage.
The homesters had the wind behind them in the first half but Garnock started off brightly, squandering 2 early chances to score with misplaced final passes. Irvine weathered the storm with long clearing kicks, trying to score from a lineout in the right corner but good defence from the back row cleared the danger. The game flowed back and forwards until the visitors, after a series of penalties camped in Irvine’s left corner. After several lineouts Garnock appeared to have scored a try, disallowed by the referee for a double movement. At halftime there was still no score.
Garnock rejigged their team at the break, introducing Danny Irvine, Joe Chapman and Ben Trodden and a neat chip by standoff Rory Walker put the home fullback in bother. This led to more attacking lineouts, all to no avail with Irvine clearing their lines with a penalty.
They eventually broke the deadlock after 50 minutes when a mazy run by centre Jared Reekie led to a try for Keir Walker which he himself converted. He then soon set up a try for left winger Trodden which he converted from the left touch line, making the score 14-0 after 60 minutes play.
With the home team tiring this should have led to further scoring, but Garnock started to leak penalties and the chance of a bonus try point was lost.
