Last Saturday Garnock travelled in good weather conditions to Balgray in Glasgow’s West End to meet undefeated League leaders GHK with some trepidation.
The visitors were unfortunately under strength, and were soon struggling against a well drilled GHK side.
Garnock started strongly with the scores still level after 10 minutes, but then the home team began scoring at regular intervals with right winger Robin Coates notching a hat trick. However, Garnock managed an impressive interception try by winger Ian Halbert converted by Greg Matthew.
Down 39-7 at the interval, Garnock never stopped battling and were rewarded by two second half tries. These came from concerted forward drives with Matt Shiells and extra forward Halbert getting the touchdowns.
GHK added a couple of late scores with full back Scott Robertson converting five in total to make the final score 65-17,although Garnock nearly managed an unlikely bonus point for a fourth try.
Garnock’s next match is on 7th March away to Lenzie in a double header for League points and the Gunn Cup.
Having been unlucky with injuries this season, we’re hoping for better results if these problems improve, as the other sides in the relegation dogfight are starting to pick up valuable points.
