Garnock Topple League Leaders (written by Allan McTaggart)
Last Saturday Garnock welcomed East Kilbride to Lochshore on a dull afternoon. Both teams had unexpectedly lost the previous weekend but this time the home side eventually just came out on top by 13-8.
With Fraser Miller, David Miller and Callum Harris returning to the starting XV, Garnock, resplendent in new strips sponsored by R Stalker & Son, CPMS, Marbill and Finding Your Feet, kicked off towards Kilbirnie. However the visitors massive forwards soon got the upper hand and it was no surprise in 8 minutes when after a series of forward drives second row Ally Dalgleish bulldozed over for an unconverted try.
This could have been ominous for Garnock but they immediately retaliated when Keir Walker kicked a penalty after offside to reduce the deficit to 5-3.
Things picked up for the home team after 15 minutes when Johnny Watson stole an EK lineout, the ball was quickly moved to the intruding fullback Rory Walker who sent left winger Ally Anderson in for a try at the corner. Keir Walker beautifully converted then soon kicked a penalty after a typical Stuart Wilson turnover to increase Garnock’s lead to 13-5.
East Kilbride hit back with penalty converted by standoff Calum Blackwood who soon missed an easier kick after a high tackle by Garnock. Tempers were starting to fray but the home team kept their cool and Ally Anderson again saved the day in the left corner after a superb long kick by Blackwood and Garnock held on to lead 13-8 at the break.
The visitors dominated most of the second half without threatening the Garnock line too often. The home team with Wilson outstanding defended stoutly disrupting the opposition line outs regularly and substitutes Graeme Reid and Alan Miller strengthened the forwards. Fly half Chrissie Neill and Rory Walker cleared their lines regularly with long touch kicks though East Kilbride seemed to run out of ideas and looked too forward orientated. The game fizzled out in near darkness after 5 minutes injury time with Garnock delighted to secure the points.
